How to Play Lawn Darts? (Rules Explained)

Lawn darts is a really fun game to play with your friends and family. There is no need for any special equipment to play this game. You just need a couple of darts to play in your backyard or lawn and you are good to go.

In lawn darts, the scoring system is based on a set of rules that determine how many points you score for each dart and what determines who won the game.

Traditional Scoring

The lawn darts are quite different from the regular dart game and the scoring system is also different. For playing lawn darts you don’t need any board or some special equipment all you need is a set of darts to play on your lawn or backyard.

The scoring of traditional lawn darts is very simple and easy to understand. The game starts by determining who gets to throw first and it can be done by tossing a coin or the players can decide by themselves.

The game requires a couple of darts and you have to mark 2 circles 35 feet apart from each other but if it is for kids then you can mark them a little close. Each team is given 2 darts and the players stand behind the circle on one end.

The players of both teams have to throw darts toward the other circle. If a player manages to land a dart inside the circular target then that team earns 3 points. This game is very competitive and fun as the scoring is done on a cancellation basis.

If the players of both teams land a dart inside the circle then the points cancel out and no team is awarded any points for that turn.

I will explain the scoring system by a few scoring scenarios:

  • If team 1 lands both of their darts inside the circle then team 1 gets 6 points only if team 2 is unable to throw any of their darts inside the circle.
  • In the 2nd case if both teams manage to throw one of their darts inside the circle then the score of both teams is canceled out and no team is awarded any points.
  • If both teams land both of their darts inside the circle, in that case, the score of both teams is canceled out and as a result, no team is rewarded with any points.
  • If both teams are unable to land any dart inside the circle in such a case no point is awarded to any team.
  • If team 1 manages to get 1 dart inside the circle while team 2 is unable to do that then team 1 is rewarded with 3 points.
  • If team 1 gets both the darts inside the circle while team 2 only gets 1 dart inside the circle then team 1 is awarded with 3 points due to the cancellation rule.

To win the game one of the teams has to score 21 points to win the game. according to some rules, it is said that you have to score exactly 21 points to win the game and some say that you have to score a few points more than 21 to win the game.

Handly Cup Scoring

Handly cup is another version of the lawn darts game that is very interesting and fun to play. The rules of this game are quite similar to the traditional lawn darts game.

The scoring of this game is also done on a cancellation basis. The team who lands the dart inside the circle gets 3 points but if the other team manages to do the same then the points of both teams are canceled and none of the teams gets any score.

I will explain the game by describing a few of the scenarios:

  • The first thing that can occur in the game is for example if the players of both teams manage to get a dart in the circular target then the points are canceled and no team is awarded any points.
  • In the second case if both teams are unable to land any dart inside the circle then the team that has one dart that is closest to the circle is awarded 1 point. Let’s say team 1 is awarded 1 point.
  • If team 1 throws both darts closer to the circle than team 2 then team 1 is awarded 2 points.
  • Out of both teams if team 1 lands 1 dart inside the circle and team 2 lands 1 dart closest to the circle. In that case, instead of earning 3 points team 1 gets only 2 points because 1 point is canceled out by 1 point of team 2.
  • If team 1 lands both of its darts inside the circle and team 2 lands 1 of its dart inside the circle then team 1 gets 3 points instead of 6 because 3 points are canceled out by the 3 points of team 2.
  • If team 1 lands 1 dart inside the circle and the other closest to the circle then team 1 earns 4 points, 1 for landing a dart closest to the circle and 3 points for landing a dart inside the circle. That is if team 2 lands no darts inside the circle.

In order to win the game, you have to score 21 points.

According to some rules, it is said that you have to score exactly 21 points to win the game and some say that you have to score a few points more than 21 to win the game.

Conclusion

It is said that the game is not won until one team has scored 21 or more than 21 points. But it is up to you what you decide whether you have to score exactly 21 points to win the game or more than 21 points to win the game.

The game is very easy to play and there are no complicated rules involved in it. In fact, you do not even need to remember anything to play the game properly. You just need to know the rules of how many points you can get.
